Back in 2012 I did a column that I always consider as one of my all-time favorites. And it was called “Heroes of the Ring”. This column correlates two mediums I enjoy that are very different but the same in many ways: comic books and pro wrestling. The goal of the column was simple, show that the “faces and heels” from WWE lore are not that far apart from the “heroes and villains” in superhero comics. The good guys were larger-than-life and the baddies were just as detestable. Well, the column did so well that I have wanted to do a part 2 with some of the more modern grapplers in WWE. Read more...

Now everyone knows I’m a pretty avid wrestling fan, maybe not as much of a comic book enthusiast, but both genres are pretty close to my heart. I’ve made many comparisons that they aren’t really as different as people think they are. There’s daring heroes, and evil villains, intriguing and sometimes unbelievable stories and mythologies...tights. There’s a lot of tights in both comics and wrestling. So every so often, usually right before a big WWE wrestling event, I enjoy writing an edition of FPB devoted to the squared circle! I figured since Survivor Series is here (for those who don’t know, it’s one of WWE’s oldest events that 5-on-5 elimination style tag matches), it would be a fine time to do just that! Read more...

11008893_10203424322078892_975692984_nLast year prior to Wrestlemania I reviewed the direct to video release of Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery I reviewed it here for you spoiler free. I gave it a resounding positive review with just a few minor flaws pointed out. For Scooby-Doo it felt like old hat reminiscent of the team-ups between the mystery solving kids and Phillis Diller, Jerry Reed, The Harlem Globetrotters, Tim Conway and even Sonny and Cher. This year’s pre-Wrestlemania animated event The Flintstones & WWE: Stone Age Smackdown I will give you the lowdown without giving too much away. Read more...

Welcome back to the what’s hot and what’s not list. If you celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday hopefully you’ve regained consciousness from your food coma by now and hopefully you didn’t get trampled by angry mobs of shoppers for a blender. catsHere's to also hoping Black Friday shoppers in New Castle, Pennsylvania didn’t have to wait inline outdoors for too long. The town has recently had a problem with the air quality. Citizens have complained that it smells like cat urine when they go outdoors. Officials aren’t sure what’s causing the odor but they think that it’s harmless. The environmental protection agency said it’s doing more testing and won’t know the results of the tests for a couple of weeks. Hmmmm…..wonder what causes cat urine odors? childsownIf you didn’t feel like standing in line or you did stand in line but didn’t get that special gift, you know because people enjoy vacuum cleaners and refrigerators for Christmas, you can order these toys instead. Child’s Own Studio is a toy company that turns your child’s drawings into a real toy. Artist, Wendy Tsao, was inspired by her four year old’s self portrait drawing and turned it into a “softie” for him. Now she does it for other children. You simply need to get your child to draw something spectacular then contact her via her website. Read more...

DSC_0845 copy copyIf you're a horror fanatic you've probably heard of Jen and Sylvia Soska. These Canadian twin sisters have taken the horror world by storm and after directing their critically acclaimed horror/thriller masterpiece, American Mary, they have become the most sought-after new filmmakers of the genre. Now the "Twisted Sisters" have just released their latest creature feature, See No Evil 2, the sequel to the original WWE Studios slasher flick starring Glenn Jacobs, who you probably know better as the Devil's Favorite Demon, WWE Superstar Kane. The original See No Evil starred Jacobs as Jacob Goodnight, a monstrous serial killer bent on unrelenting murder and mayhem. Of course, The "Big Red Monster" was a natural in that role, and the first film received quite a cult following. Read more...

For Hunter Rain d 2In animation there have been experiments of mixing cartoon characters that have paid off. Johnny Bravo and Scooby-Doo, All Star Laff-A-Lympics, Richie Rich and Scooby-Doo even Scooby Doo and Dynomutt. These success stories have two things in common. First, they all involve Hanna- Barbera characters and second they all involve Scooby-Doo. When I heard they were doing a crossover direct to video feature involving Scooby and the gang and WWE superstars I started drooling. Now that’s not to say I was not skeptical. Live action characters from the wrestling entertainment universe of mega stars. In fact while I will always be a fan of the Hulk Hogan’s Rock and Wrestling cartoon it did not hold up very well over time and nightmares of that era is echoing in the current WWE. So I went in with reasonable expectations. After all Scooby-Doo is a sacred cow in cartoonland.   Read more...

SS_93Well, it’s that time of year again, Thanksgiving! Well, American Thanksgiving, I should say. While we up in “Alpha Flight” country, Canada, actually celebrate our Day of Thanks a few months earlier in October, there happens to be one American Thanksgiving tradition I look forward to every year: WWE Survivor Series! Ever since I was a little kid, WWE (or WWF) put on this unique pay-per-view event that usually pit teams of wrestlers against each other in 5-on-5 elimination matches. A guy gets pinned, he’s sent to the showers. The teams whittle down until every member of a team is eliminated. So basically you can end up with literally one man against 5! It’s always fun to see just who would survive in these unpredictable matchups. So, I’m dusting off my ‘ol Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase t-shirt (yes, I actually have one...don’t judge me!), and revisiting my personal favorite Survivor Series matches over the ages! Read more...

Matt StrikerThere have been many teaching gimmicks in wrestling from Dean Douglas to Michelle McCool’s dominatrix teaching gimmick. However, none of these really stuck like Matt Striker’s pompous, arrogant teaching gimmick and his “Word of The Day” segments. These helped him being even more unlikable and have been used most notably by Damien Sandow. While he didn’t stick around long as a wrestler, he became a very good commentator and really helped sell matches with his vast knowledge of holds and Hall of Fame wrestlers.   He was recently released from WWE and I caught up with him to see how he’s doing!
