Most Trade Paperbacks (TPBs) don't hold a special place in the hearts of comic book collectors. They're stories collected in book format which means they're reprints. If you're not into collecting and just in it for the story then a TPB is one of the greatest things to ever happen to comic books. You don't have to go searching for old copies to complete the story. TPBs are great for learning about new characters or to get reacquainted with some of your old favourites. The TPBs do have a few drawbacks. Some of the charm of comic books are the letters to the editor, extra stories at the end which are usually a two or three page story for an upcoming book, and in the old comics you got those great advertisements. You won't get variant covers or fancy holograms either. Read more...

In the summer of 1966, Fantastic Four #52 debuted the first notable African superhero. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby birthed the Black Panther and it wasn't long before the character starred in his own solo ongoing comic, the first to ever star a black superhero. Ever since however, he has been one of the most underrated superheroes in Marvel lore. But no more.  Read more...

I don’t know what kind of being James Gunn is at this point. He seems like a director of geekcentric film that was built from the ground up for the benefit of mankind. He just seems to get it. He knows that in these times we need films that are fun from beginning to end and will absolutely take us away from our complicated lives for a couple of hours. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, like its predecessor, does that spectacularly. Read more...

Every so often I do some rigorous research and put together a little must-read guide...just to get everyone caught up to speed and fully aware of what is in store in the latest big superhero blockbuster or TV show. When I was a young adult I craved finding classic comic book stories. Mostly for the artwork, I scoured many a dollar bin in my day looking for any comics I could find illustrated by the legends: Jack Kirby, Neal Adams, John Romita Sr., Gil Kane, John Buscema, John Byrne and of course, Steve Ditko. Eventually I came across the reprints of the first few Spider-Man stories which featured Spidey taking on for the first time, famous rogues such as Chameleon, Lizard, Vulture, Electro and so on. Great stuff that I think everyone should have in their collections, but doubled up in the back of my reprint of the first ever Spidey story from Amazing Fantasy #15 telling the wall-crawler’s origin was the OTHER most popular character that Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created together, Doctor Strange. Back in 1995/1996 I was the only kid (to my knowledge) in my high school that would use a good portion of his lunch money to buy a comic book or two (or 5) every week instead of actual food. It didn’t matter to me if Spider-Man was knee-deep in the clone saga or Superman had a mullet...comics were my life and still are and I never thought that made me uncool or not popular...I felt it made me the opposite...even if I was hard-pressed to find ANYONE that cared about comics as much as me. But then a movie came along that made me realize there WERE people out there like me. And they were ACTUALLY cool because of it. Or at least, I thought they were. It was Kevin Smith’s Mallrats and before I met the characters of Brodie, Jay & Silent Bob, I have never seen or heard of a movie where guys had posters with comic characters (some of the same ones I had, even), talked about comics like I did and even my favorite superhero Wolverine is mentioned (WAY before the X-Men movies came out). I mean, STAN LEE was in it! People actually KNEW who that was?! I soon went backwards and saw his previous film and debut as a filmmaker, Clerks and found out just how talented this dude is at telling stories. There is nothing like a Kevin Smith screenplay, you can quote me on that. Read more...

Sometimes I think it’s not even right for me to write reviews on Marvel Studios’ movies. What can I say? I’ve never received one paycheck from the company, and I feel something of a “company man”. I’ve grown up adoring the Marvel Universe and its characters. You can’t look in any direction in my house and not see some kind of Marvel merchandise. But for Captain America: Civil War, I just can’t sit here and not speak about the movie. It’s not even a movie to me at this point. After seeing it I can only call it a materialisation of everything I love about comic book superheroes, specifically Marvel’s brand of heroes. Read more...
