Last week, I told of a couple of convenience stores that I used to go to back in my childhood. I HAD an actual comic book store, complete with both new comics and vintage back issues in my town. But the owner did not stock EVERYTHING for the discerning collector. Back then in the 1970's and even into the early 1980's, a kid had to cover a great deal of ground in order to find ALL of the books that they collected each month. I never paid all that much attention to the names of the stores, so when I wanted to go to a particular store, I had to use descriptive nick names to tell my parents which store I needed to get to then. COMICAD marvel_mood_ringsNot too long ago I wrote a column about comic book ads. You know the ones that USED to be inside comic books, that let you buy some of the neatest stuff in the world for like a quarter. I talked about how those ads could help improve your love life, make you taller, help you get a job or give you a job. The comic book ads had marvelous things. Sea creatures, mini monkey's and dogs, sleds that hovered and glasses that let you see through peoples clothes. You could improve your strength or gain weight. It was a great time to be a kid if only just for the ads. Today I'm not talking about those ads though. Today I'm going into what the Super Heroes sold! That's right for every page of ads you found in comic books you could find at least one if not more ads that had our favorite heroes selling something, and selling stuff they did!   Read more...
