When you hear, Jail Bait and Trailer Trash, you might be thinking that your sister's boyfriend finally wrote his family's memoires, but it's actually something much better than that. DSC_0845 copy copyIf you're a horror fanatic you've probably heard of Jen and Sylvia Soska. These Canadian twin sisters have taken the horror world by storm and after directing their critically acclaimed horror/thriller masterpiece, American Mary, they have become the most sought-after new filmmakers of the genre. Now the "Twisted Sisters" have just released their latest creature feature, See No Evil 2, the sequel to the original WWE Studios slasher flick starring Glenn Jacobs, who you probably know better as the Devil's Favorite Demon, WWE Superstar Kane. The original See No Evil starred Jacobs as Jacob Goodnight, a monstrous serial killer bent on unrelenting murder and mayhem. Of course, The "Big Red Monster" was a natural in that role, and the first film received quite a cult following. Read more...

477_FifthSet_still_magazinesThis is officially the last DarXide column that you’ll ever read. This year that is. The end of a year that has seen many ups and downs just in the comic book world alone. Scandals, rumors, back stabbing and a dead Peter Parker. Yes, the world of comic books had some major downers this year but here are four books that did not disappoint and will hopefully continue to be great in the coming year.   Read more...

nova 7 cropBright Young Stars It’s great watching new characters develop as I continue to read comics. While the two main publishing houses continually strive to reinvent themselves, one of the key problems they face is how do you keep things fresh? How many times can you write an original plot? How many characters eventually replicate each others powers? Of course, that’s not to say that popular characters don’t work – that’s why they’re popular – it’s just hard to try and keep them from growing stagnant. One of the best ways to prevent this from happening is to pass on the baton to someone else. That way, the character or alter-ego remains the same, while the personality can often be allowed to be radically different. Look at the Death of Bruce Wayne for instance. I cite this saga a lot but when Dick Grayson took up the Mantle of the Bat, the character was invigorated and the evolution of Batman was complete. It seemed a backwards step bringing Bruce Wayne back as the Caped Crusader but, as Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have proved over the last two years, there’s only one Dark Knight Detective. what if 1So, after much resistance and much hesitation I decided to resume reading modern comics (I can’t help it I love comics) after 9 months. OK I was reading To Hell You Ride and SkullKickers plus a few others but I was not reading Marvel and DC. But I did read Age of Ultron recently (after it was done a while) and Guardians of the Galaxy has been a hoot! On the DC side I am still struggling to find something since Lot 13 but I keep my mind open to the right story. Maybe I will try Trinity War at some point. Today though, I have something else. So let’s get this monkey smoking.   Read more...

batwing ASince FCBD, I started picking up new comic book titles. I was pretty committed to DC before as I am (and will be for the foreseeable future) a huge advocate the New 52 universe. It excited me and made me interested in my favorite characters in a completely new way. I ate up most of the Green Lantern titles, Earth 2 and the re-imagining of the Justice League. Read more...

Ultimate-Spider-Man-Disney-XDIt's rare that we see Spider-Man web-slinging over the rooftops of a city other than good 'ol New York, but now and then the wall crawler has to go and take it to the bad guys in another town, as is the case in this week's all-new episode of Ultimate Spider-Man on Disney XD! In a special episode written by Marvel CCO, Joe Quesada and his often partner in crime, Jimmy Palmiotti, Spider-Man must travel to Boston (pronounced BAHSTEN, right?) to battle a trio of Massachusetts themed super-villains.  Read more...
