Gotham Academy is a book unlike any other in the Batman themed books. It's playful, energetic and cartoony...and at first glance it may not look like a book a guy in his 30's would read. But I gave it a try, just to try something different. And I was instantly hooked. Sure it was a book starring a bunch of teenagers, but the feel of the book worked like nothing else I've read. It was a mystery comic set in the Batman universe, and many Batman characters were featured, but the new characters like the mysterious Olive Silverlock and the lovable Maps hooked me and I became a fan. I needed to see what would happen next!!! Read more...

Being a kid is the best thing to ever happen to a person. Everything is new and exciting and most importantly, anything is possible. Being a kid also means asking lots of questions. In general adults are ridiculous people so when a kid asks an adult a question they get a ridiculous answer. Sometimes you'd get a ridiculous answer but a fun one. One of the all time favorites is, why does it thunder? Sometimes you'd get an answer involving Thor or Zeus, but the best answers were something like, God is bowling and he just got a strike. When the thunder wasn't as loud it meant he got a gutter, which in turn made God cry which is why it's raining. Adults can be ridiculous but they're good for a laugh. What does any of this have to do with comic books? A lot, actually. Mythology has been used in stories since the beginning of comics. Read more...

Science Fiction is a fun because the sky is the limit. Absolutely anything can and will happen. The fans can all probably agree on a few things on what they enjoy about it. For most it’s the worlds and world building. It’s the imagination brought to life. It’s the characters. Most of all it’s the possibilities. The endless possibilities and the hope the stories bring. For those reasons alone it can be tough to introduce an audience to new worlds and new characters. Why try a new story when you’ve already found your best friends in your current favorite story? Well, sometimes it’s just good to try new things. Think of it this way, how will we continue to explore this world and other worlds if we’re too afraid to try new things? Read more...

bitchplanet_logoIt’s safe to say that no one is sure what will happen in the future, not even Miss Cleo and her psychic friends. What we can be sure of is that writers and artists have a lot of fun creating what could be the future. Some of those stories revolve around planets. There’s the beloved, Planet of the Apes, Red Planet, Brother From Another Planet and now we have Bitch Planet. Read more...

leadThere is a saying that goes something like "what a difference a year makes". It may not be the year part, but I really needed to set this up and that worked best. I had just finished the 2014 Top 50 comics column and went looking for the stats on how January fared when I saw something that I was not expecting. I was expecting something, but this was what can only be called shocking. The main force behind it could be related to just one comic book and that makes it even more shocking. What is it? You will have to wait for a few more seconds (unless you skip this). Another thing that came up this month was we have four first issues on the list. Last year it was amazing to have one per month and it had to be like a major character like Wolverine, Spider-Man, or Batman to make it happen. Is this going to be a trend in 2015? Who knows but it is a new year for the Top 20 column and we need to get started.   Read more...

hq leadThis column is going to be just a tad wonky this month. You see I had to make a decision on whether to write two columns about the comic book industry or three. I love to do these columns, but I also (just like you I think) get tired of the same thing time and time again. So what it amounted to was I could do a December Top 20 list or a 2014 Top 20 list. I went with 2014. I decided this mainly on the fact that I could combine the December stats with the column and then just move on to January later on in the week. What all this means is I will still have all that stat goodness and I will have the Top 10 list from December for comics, but the big list this month comes from the yearly overall sales. Now, sit back, put up your feet, and lets get started. Read more...
