SupermanVillainsWith The Man of Steel still racking up the cash at the box office, we can now look forward to that inevitable sequel! Superhero sequels are very important, because they truly solidify the franchise and with all that “boring origin stuff” out of the way, we can finally get a good more comic book feel and hit the ground running. And as seen in movies like Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2 and the upcoming Captain America: Winter Soldier, we can also concentrate on the villains a little more, and give them more attention. So, that begs the question...who should Henry Cavill’s Superman face next?! I have a few logical choices, a few more that would be just AWESOME but we probably will never see, and then a few that I hope we never get around to seeing!!! Ever!! Not needed whatsoever. Mikegrell_profileI have rarely had the chance to sit down with artists and creators that I literally grew up admiring, and sometimes those people are let downs. They aren’t always as awesome as you'd hoped. This is not the case with Mike Grell, the legendary artist of DC’s The Warlord and the critically acclaimed Green Arrow: Longbow Hunters. Grell’s work on Longbow Hunters and the ongoing Green Arrow series after that set the standard for Green Arrow stories and inspired guys like Kevin Smith, Judd Winick and Andy Diggle to take on the character. Not to mention a certain TV show on the CW Network has taken Grell’s work and imagery and brought it to a mass audience. I had the honor to sit down with Mike (I’m allowed to call him Mike) at Ottawa ComicCon, and talk about his humble beginnings as an illustrator, Warlord, his reinvention of Oliver Queen and as a a special added bonus, a story that proves that being a comic creator is sometimes just as cool as being a rock star! Flashpoint-Paradox-first-image-fixJust before DC Comics unleashed the New 52, they put together an one last mega-event for the DC Universe that many of us grew up with. It was called Flashpoint, and it featured the newly returned Barry Allen trapped in an alternate universe created by Reverse Flash where his mother was very much alive and he was not The Flash anymore. That wasn't even the shocking part of the Flashpoint universe, pretty much all of the DC heroes from Batman to Cyborg were drastically changed. Read more...

batman18coverIt's a new month so this must mean there is a new Top 20 list! It also means that you get to read the break down of all the numbers from this month, and it is also a quarterly month so we have all those great numbers to look through to! OK, so many of you have already dropped to the bottom of this column to see where your favorite title showed up. Some of you though (I hope) are still reading this though, so I just want to say thank you to the pencil pushers and pocket wearing protectors people out there! This month is surprising. Not so much with the Top 20 list,  but the numbers were shocking, at least to me. One of the Big 2 took a dive, and believe it or not the year to date numbers aren't as good as last year. I'm getting ahead of myself though, so why don't we just light this candle and get started. Read more...

bigstock_Irish_shamrock_ideal_for_St_Pa_13568951Top O’ the morning to ya, Bleederz (or early evening)! I hope you all had and are having a fine St. Patrick’s Day! And if you are still somewhat sober enough to read, I’d like to celebrate the day when everyone is Irish...with a list of the best characters with Irish descent! Just to be clear this is not the ones that are actually directly from Ireland (because the list would be pretty, Top 3), so they can be Irish-American as well. Read more...

ROBotiX | Science Fiction offers us much; journeys to wonderfully bizarre alien planets, terrifying encounters with new species, trips through the fabric of time and space, and always asks the question, “What if?” *firing up the generators…* Along the way, we are treated to glimpses of some outlandish and incredible technology. *tachyons accelerating…* One of Science Fiction’s greatest tropes is the exploration and advancement of technology and the subsequent ramifications it has of mankind. *configuring…* Couple this with the continued progression of humans into outer space; we are bound to meet others as we travel. Of course, as any sci-fi fan knows, we rarely make many extraterrestrial allies and war ensues. What do you need to fight a war? Some pretty kick-ass weapons, that’s what! *broadcasting in 3..2..1..* This is my own personal preference so please don’t come after me with Cable's shoulder mounted plasma cannon if you disagree – do feel free to comment below though and offer up your own suggestions! .......BEGIN TRANSMISSION....... ROBotiX | Maybe the announcement that Marvel’s second wave of comic to movie transfers was to feature the Guardians of the Galaxy is somewhat old news but I realized today that I had never really focused any of my reviews on the cosmic side of comic book proceedings! *firing up the generators…* Being our so-called sci-fi buff how could I have ignored such an integral part of the comic book universe*tachyons accelerating…*? Maybe it has been due to my year long obsession with Monsters? *configuring…* Anyway, that’s another story...*broadcasting in 3..2..1..* I’m going to take a look at two titles from the major publishing houses this week. Why? Well, science fiction is a great mainstay of independent titles. It’s a great medium to work in particular so because world building, while increasingly difficult to make unique and original, offers a great freedom to the indie writer. There are no constraints or already-bound rules to adhere to. Anything is possible within science fiction. Especially if it’s all your own doing. .......BEGIN TRANSMISSION....... Read more...
