gl 23It's that time again! Yep August's Top 20! I had some things to say about the Big 2 putting all their eggs in 6 baskets last month. What I said was the Big 2 are controlling the Top 10 with basically six books. Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man, Justice League, JLA and Batman. Well I should have added Superman to that list last month and thought so at the time, but now he is officially entered and you will see why. Jess Kirby had a few things to say about the same characters in moves a short while ago(see link here ), and how she would like to see some other characters besides what is already out there. I agreed with her and think the same should be done with the comics. Do we really need another SuperbatspideyXvenger? No I don't think we do. Making all the popular characters in one book is not any better either! I say trim down the titles and make really really great books than have 16 titles of average quality. Enough with the rant though, I will have something on that later in the week, let's get to the numbers.   Read more...

Justice-LeagueHollywood Brave and Bold You hear anything announced this week? See any memes lately that seemed aimed at the guy who knows Jason Bourne? You would have to have been trapped in a pit with a broken back to have missed the latest announcement from Warner Bros. Ben Affleck IS Batman. For me, it’s not an issue. I haven’t seen the movie. I haven’t seen any stills. I haven’t seen a costume. I like Affleck and I think he looks the part. Plus, it means that things are moving forward with the Man of Steel sequel (my favourite movie of 2013 without a doubt). There’s controversy surrounding this choice – with a ridiculous amount of hate and bile that gives comic book fans a bad name – so I thought I’d whip up a bit more fury – just for fun, of course... So we have Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman and Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. It may also be true that Bryan Cranston has signed on to play Lex Luthor. But let’s look even further ahead – we need to consider the Justice League. Read more...

supes gA Change May Do You Good One of the columns that I found the most interesting to write was when I looked at the various “Ages” of comics. Looking at the Golden, Silver and Bronze Ages, the British Invasion and, inevitably, the Modern Age of comics. What I found most interesting was that with each “Age” came a period of change. What is particularly intriguing is that most accounts are written in retrospect – especially as comic books as a medium have become increasingly more prominent in popular culture – and there is little account of people’s (particularly fans) opinions from the times. Looking back, these times are fondly remembered. They ushered in some awesome new story-lines, re-imagined some of out favourite characters and launched publishers to new found fame. They’re remembered for bringing comics to the mainstream and, on many occasions, revitalizing them. Now we come to recent years.   Read more...

spider-manJuly is typically when the summer starts to heat up. Sure it's hot in June, but in July it's like some one turns the heat knob up a couple of notches. I say this because for the last 6 months or so, this column, at least the beginning of this column where I talk about how the Big 2 fared, has been less than exciting. Marvel has pretty much dominated the market for the first half of the year and although DC had been creeping up, they really hadn't made a big move. That changes with July and you will be able to read about it in the next paragraph, but first I would like to tell you about a whole new comparison. Read more...

batmansupermanThe news that came from San Diego Comic Con this year wasn’t exceptionally forthcoming but one thing that definitely started fans chattering is the semi-announcement of a Batman/Superman movie. There wasn’t an official, hey we’re definitely making a Batman and Superman team up movie, but some dialogue was read and a logo was revealed. This is just enough information to get plenty of speculators speculating. Read more...

martian-manhunter-injustice-gods-among-usIf you noticed in the Injustice DLC reveal trailer from a few weeks ago that featured Zod, it had ended with a tight shot on Martian Manhunter, whom (until now) has merely been a background character surveying the battles in the JLA Watchtower arena. Many of us thought, well, could this be a clue as who is NEXT to be added as a playable character? Oh, it totally was, and it has now been revealed that J'onn J'onzz himself will indeed be the new character in the game! Pretty cool beans if you ask me! Martian Manhunter has been a cult favorite for years and was until now the only major Ju Read more...

2791937-994719_dc_universe_online_lex_luthor_power_armor_superDo you guys remember the opening cinematic from DC Universe Online? Course you do. You know the one I mean, set in the near future, the Justice League are fighting for their lives against a super villain team-up like never before. Forget the Legion of Doom; this is Justice League: Doomed! As Green Lantern faces off against an enraged Black Adam, Batman takes on Deathstroke – much to the chagrin of the Joker – while Lex Luthor, in incredible looking, enhanced Power Armour lords over the carnage. The cliff-hanger that leads into the game left us all with our chins firmly planted on the floor. Many of us wanted to see this for real. Was this the Justice League movie that never was? Well, Adam Jay of Superhero Creations, wants to bring that dream to life.  Read more...
