This fall with WONDER WOMAN #31, a new creative team comprising writer James Robinson (STARMAN, JSA: THE GOLDEN AGE, EARTH 2), Carlo Pagulayan (DEATHSTROKE, BATMAN AND ROBIN ETERNAL) and Emanuela Lupacchino (SUPERGIRL, SUPERWOMAN, STARFIRE) will begin a six-month run on DC’s main WONDER WOMAN twice-monthly comic book series with a new story arc, “Children of the Gods.” Read more...

It shouldn’t have taken this long. Wonder Woman, the first full-fledged female superhero, created in 1942 by Charles Moulton Marston (also the creator of the polygraph test, in case you didn’t know) and H.G. Peter and maybe one of the most recognized comic book icons in history should have gotten a live action, full-length, wide released film adaptation DECADES ago. But perhaps the world was not ready. Perhaps female-led superhero movie flops like Catwoman and Elektra held things back. But let’s be honest here. The fact that Barb Wire got a movie before Wonder Woman is just too embarrassing. Great Hera! It is Wonder Woman's 75th Anniversary! The Amazing Amazon first appeared in All-Star Comics #8, the December 1941 issue. The character was created by William Moulton Marston, as well as both Marston's wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston and artist H.G. Peter. Both of the latter were not credited. The Marstons co-inhabitant Olive Byrne is credited as being the pattern for Wonder Woman's physical appearance. Marston patterned the character after the feminists of the day. One such example is that of Feminist Margaret Sanger. With the exception of a brief time in 1986, Wonder Woman's adventures have been continuing unabated for the entirety of the past 75 years! 18 Minutes of moral morass… Whether you like DC Comics’ direction in their books, film or animation they seem to be all in. Which direction is that you ask? Why the continued darkening of their Universe and the transition to blurred lines in what defines a hero. With films like Man of Steel, the New 52 reboot of 2011 (and now Convergence) it seems the more flawed the hero, the better for DC and its parent company Warner Bros. On July 28th the latest installment of the DC Animated Universe will get an ElseWorlds (alternate Universe) treatment and the chance to inject bleak darkness into another version of this Universe was too great to pass up. Even for Bruce Timm. The revered and yet recently departed (creative differences) creator of Batman TAS has returned to the DCAU with this coming film. While TAS might be the greatest cartoon of all time, it is safe to say that despite towing the company line and touting this work, Gods and Monsters is not the traditional fare he respected so highly. But while this is an alternate world (for which I am so grateful) it is an opportunity to rationalize poor decisions, glorify the darkness and up the violence level another notch on the “get the gamer audience” belt. How do I know this when the film isn’t released? Read more...

pacific-rim-comic-con-posterRun for your lives! Evacuate the city! Hide your daughters! It’s The Bleeder King!! With Guillermo Del Toro’s monsters vs. robots epic, Pacific Rim coming out this coming Friday, I thought it would be a snazzy idea to take some of the craziest monolithic robots and ginourmous monsters from comics and pit them up against each other one-on-one in an epic, city crushing, smackdown! I took the biggest, baddest giant monsters around and I think I came up with a pretty good card with matches involving characters from Marvel, DC, IDW and Dark Horse and while these matches will probably never happen, it’s fun to ask...“what if?” Read more...
