I don’t know what kind of being James Gunn is at this point. He seems like a director of geekcentric film that was built from the ground up for the benefit of mankind. He just seems to get it. He knows that in these times we need films that are fun from beginning to end and will absolutely take us away from our complicated lives for a couple of hours. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, like its predecessor, does that spectacularly. Read more...

What’s the definition of a hero? Well, if you look it up, the official definition is: a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Does that define Jim Starlin’s power hungry, Death worshipping character, Thanos? Not exactly. Not normally...but in Starlin’s trilogy of graphic novels (also, the Thanos vs. Hulk miniseries coupled in there), here we have a character that has forever been portrayed as tyrannically mad, finding himself in the role of savior of the universe as we know it! Well, I guess by now the cat’s out of the bag! We are definitely getting a sequel to the hottest superhero movie so far of 2016, Deadpool! And not only that, in the end-credits scene Deadpool himself informs us that his cyborg from the future BFF Cable will appear in the sequel! If that didn’t make us all “squee”, nothing will! Thanos is back! More specifically The Mad Titan’s creator, Jim Starlin, is back with an all new original graphic novel continuing the space faring shenanigans of the Marvel supervillain. It has been pretty much a year since Starlin’s last Thanos OGN, Infinity Revelation, in which Thanos actually teamed up with his longtime rival, Adam Warlock against some of Marvel’s most beloved cosmic characters. It was a pretty oddball story but had more than its share of both fans and critics (me being one of the latter), but in the end, Starlin’s take on his own character is a unique one, and that alone was worth the read. Even though I’m on the fence with Starlin’s writing style, who am I to argue? This is Thanos how he was meant to be! Read more...

It’s that time of year again, it’s the show of shows! The granddaddy of them all! Wrestlemania! And like every year, I have a special column dedicated to the biggest sports entertainment spectacle of the year! This year I wanted to do something a bit different and fun, and count down my personal all-time dream matches for Wrestlemania. Some of these may happen, some are highly unlikely and some are literally impossible, but we can all dream, can’t we?! And after all “anything can happen in the WWE!” This was a really difficult task to weed these down to 5, but these are the grapplers that I personally wish could meet and steal the show. Enjoy! tumblr_nfiiogTDjB1rl14rno1_1280It’s been said before that Marvel Studios gamble on Guardians of the Galaxy was possibly one of the most incredible strokes of genius in the history of the superhero movie genre. While Blade was also a bizarre choice as an opener to Marvel’s cinematic history, it also proved that 1) not all superhero movies need A-list stars and 2) not all superheroes wear capes. Switch to what is not classed as the ‘beginning’ of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man. This origin story propelled the Avengers in to the public consciousness and the anticipation for their combined appearance far exceeded anything that the X-Men had been able to deliver previously. As Marvel sets up the stage for Phase 3 of their master plan, Avengers Age of Ultron is another stepping stone in their dominance over the genre. Read more...

537ba61b764b4So,we all know what pretty much EVERY other comic book/pop culture website and blogger thinks should be cast as Captain Marvel in Marvel Studios' first female led superhero film. Yeah, you've heard them all... Katee Sackoff, Emily Blunt....and let's face it, pretty much everybody and their grandmother's cat wants it to be Natalie Dormer (who as Margaery Tyrell uses that sly smile of hers to, um, how do I put it...CHARM the underage new king in Game of Thrones), and while all of those are pretty great choices...are they really the only ones?! I mean, let's face it. This is a very important movie. Probably even more important than the first Iron Man or Guardians of the Galaxy was, because female superhero movies have not done well in the past. Captain_Marvel_Vol_7_1_Granov_Variant_TextlessLet's face it...they have absolutely sucked! Catwoman, Supergirl, Elektra....yeah. Not a very good track record. And let's face it. We knew superheroes and space adventures could draw audiences if done right. We have nothing but proof that female superhero movies don't! This is Marvel's biggest challenge ever. And while the film is slated for 2018, the internet has just gone insane with fan-casting of Carol Danvers. And with good reason, Carol's a great character with a rich comic book history. So,since I've done this previously with a few of DC's heroes like Wonder Woman, Batman and most recently DC's former Captain Marvel, Shazam....let's try my first Marvel casting column...with a twist! Let's cast OTHER Carols! Possible casting choices that have been lost in the Sackoff/Dormer hullabaloo. For this column, since I like to rate each choice, I will be rating each actress by her "Carol Calibre" from 1 to 5. Read more...
