Most Trade Paperbacks (TPBs) don't hold a special place in the hearts of comic book collectors. They're stories collected in book format which means they're reprints. If you're not into collecting and just in it for the story then a TPB is one of the greatest things to ever happen to comic books. You don't have to go searching for old copies to complete the story. TPBs are great for learning about new characters or to get reacquainted with some of your old favourites. The TPBs do have a few drawbacks. Some of the charm of comic books are the letters to the editor, extra stories at the end which are usually a two or three page story for an upcoming book, and in the old comics you got those great advertisements. You won't get variant covers or fancy holograms either. Read more...

I just this week finished the final chapter of Marvel’s Secret Wars event, which ended an era for the Marvel Universe and opened a new one, an ALL-NEW ALL DIFFERENT one. I’m a lifelong Marvel Comics reader...and no matter what they do to their characters and stories, I’m going to remain that way. After all is said and done, I’m a lifer. And boy, are things different than just 10 years ago. Some good changes, some bad ones...but evolution has always been a key element to Marvel and its characters.  Change isn’t a bad thing. But now, in the Marvel Movie Era, the movies now impact those changes. Read more...

After years of teasing, political pundits, comedians and just generally EVERYONE that doesn’t take American politics seriously at all got the announcement they’ve been clamoring for: Donald Trump is running for United States President! And it was EXACTLY the media circus you’d expect it to be. It had racially bigoted comments...talks of building great walls (gold plated, I assume), bragging about riches, bragging about selling real estate...bragging about everything. There was Milania, Ivanka...Oprah (not really, but Trump wants to run with Oprah as his running mate...because Oprah apparently NEEDS to run for political office for some reason). There was Neil Young’s “Keep On Rockin’ In The Free World” blaring in the background (without Neil Young’s permission). I know Trump already believes he’s a gift from the Gods, but I actually think he is! From the Comedy Gods, anyway. Read more...

So, it all but looks like the Marvel Universe will be getting the do-over treatment once their mega-event Secret Wars comes to its conclusion. Which could be called a bit redundant, since DC Comics did it not even 5 years ago. But I personally always choose to look at the situation “glass half full”, and absolutely refuse to see ONLY the bad effects from flushing away decades of continuity in one fell swoop (actually, I already did that in another column months ago). After all, it’s now happening no matter what. I might as well look forward to the ushering in of a whole new age of Marvel comics! More importantly, a whole new era for creators who may have never even gotten the chance to work on certain titles a chance to start from scratch and rebuild these heroes from the ground up. Last week the Secret Wars began with the release of Secret Wars #1. Since then it has gained even more eyes than expected and the reason is that the future of the Marvel Universe very literally rests within the pages of this not very well disguised relaunch of the new 616 (if it is even called that afterwards) and it’s reconstruction, new origins, locales and costumes are a sure thing it would seem and who remains the same and who doesn’t isn’t as simple as normal. With Fox owning the film rights to Fantastic Four and X-Men there has been rumor built upon rumor that their continued feud (fueled by the internet’s legion of geeks and Marvel’s own in-comic demonstrations to dilute or change the characters at the very least) there is real expectations for this series. On May 13, the tie-ins start dropping too. From the X-Men having their own planet, to the Marvel you being in line with the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) the rumors are raging and the rumors have been fairly well confirmed over time in feel if not specifics.
