It was only a matter of time before I got to this one, right? One of the coolest aspects of comicdom has always been the fact that many of our heroes need spiffy, space-age vehicles to get around in, right? I mean, how else is the Fantastic Four going to get to Latvaria to battle Dr. Doom or the X-Men going to get to wherever the Brotherhood is causing trouble? They need transportation! Over the years there’s been a great amount of vehicles that have come along...and then...not so much. This here’s a list of the coolest of the cool, so don’t expect the Spider-Buggy or the Jokermobile or anything weird like that. Also, the Guardians’ Milano was JUST introduced in the comics, so that didn’t make the cut either! And as always, your favorite may not make the list! My apologies, but you know how hard it is to please EVERYONE! Feel free to air your opinion in the comments section! Read more...

My readers have heard me speak reverently several times in the past about the Rock Bottom Bookshop, which I frequented in my childhood. We comic book fans of a certain era, pre-comic shops, and WAY before Previews, you could never be sure that you would get the books that you wanted. That is why I loved going to the Rock Bottom! The Rock Bottom, an institution in our town nowadays, was founded and managed by Ms. Wilda (NOT Wilma) Hardin. Read more...

I just finished re-reading my friend Rob's book "Hey Kids, Comics!!" (the book was named after a website of his)! The book is filled with essays by various comic book pros and fans alike. And a common theme in these essays, is that of how much of a struggle it could be to hunt down your favorite comics (back in the day, you had to cover some ground in order to get to ALL of your favorites). And , those essays served to remind me of how lucky I was as a kid growing up in the 1970's. Read more...

I’ve been wanting to do this column for weeks now, and in that amount of time some interesting developments have happened to the solo Batman movie in development starring Ben Affleck. Affleck first dropped out of being the director of the film allegedly because he didn’t think he could handle starring AND directing...which sounds pretty simple. Then Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves was apparently being courted for the job, then some rumors of Affleck being (ALREADY?) tired of being The Bat sprouted around the internet....and now apparently the Reeves thing has fallen apart. The movie could very well be in limbo at this point. Read more...

Everyone has that one comic book--the one that turned them from a casual reader into a collector. Mine was Batman #311. Oh, I'd been reading comic books since 1974, but it was always just whatever caught my eye on the spinner rack. But, Batman #311 was different. "Dr. Phosphorus Is Back!!" The cover looked great, Batman shielding special guest star Batgirl from a burning "Skeleton Man!" I had to read this book! So, I paid my 40 cents and I couldn't wait to get home and read the book! I was not disappointed. Read more...

Gotham is finally back from the mid-season break and it seems it was worth the wait. Kicking things off is a hearing for Jim Gordon. Did he have anything to do with the death of Theo Galavan? According to Jim Gordon he did not. According to the last episode he’s a liar, liar pants on fire, but that’s ok because there’s a new guy in town who can help put out those flames. Read more...

September 27th was Batman Day, a day where every year generations of fans of the Caped Crusader celebrate the awesome pop culture icon. Just what is it about The Bat that has made him the most popular superhero of all time? Is it the badass costume? The fighting skills? Those “wonderful toys”? Maybe it’s his super intelligence or detective skills? Well, it’s ALL of those things, really. But I think most of all, it’s the relatable nature that the character exudes. Without any real powers, Batman is pretty much a normal person. Read more...
