It’s not every day that I get to interview a talent artist who should be working for one of the big comic book publishers, let alone be friends with one for over a decade. Tim Doyle is an underrated force in the world of comic book and pop culture art and has been running Nakatomi for almost seven years. He’s come a long way since working at Funny Papers, a now defunct comic book store that was located in Dobie Mall on the edge of campus at the University of Texas. I recently caught up with him after a couple of years at the Austin Comic Con in Austin, TX and talked shop and what’s on his current pull list. Read more...

There’s nothing better than having a faithful furry companion, is there?! We all love our pets to the point of loading up all of our social media accounts with cute pictures of them, and some of us even give our pets their OWN accounts (although it could be a bit crushing when your puppy gets more followers than you)! Of course even our beloved comic book superheroes have pets as well...and some of them are just as badass at fighting crime and beloved by fans as their owners! Read more...

Montrealers are about to get another dose of extreme geektastical awesomeness this summer! Our own "Bleeder King", Dave Michaels went to the big MCC 2015 press conference and brought back some very juicy announcements! MCC spokesman, radio DJ, rockstar and friend to eXpertComics, Jason Rockman, hosted the event along with Montreal mayor (and self professed fanboy), Denis Coderre. Mayor Coderre said he was happy to visit the convention last year and cannot wait for this year's event. Leading the pack of celeb guests is Aquaman in the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice movie, Jason Mamoa! Jason was one of the guests in 2013, and loved it so much, he's back to visit his MTL fans! Read more...

blackspideysymbol-wpUsually in comics these days to capture the audience’s attention and boost sales, the publisher will do a crossover event, switch up the creative team or...y’know, the ‘ol “have the main character’s body taken over by one of his worst enemies shtick”. But back in the 80’s and 90’s, when darker and more edgy characters were the newest trend, comics would sometimes do something that would make ANYONE want to read the book. They would make a classic superhero change their normally brightly colored duds into a black version. This was tried and tested and successful for many characters, and is still attempted to this very day. And this was all in the assumption that the color BLACK was somehow cooler than any other color in the spectrum. Were they wrong? Nah, probably not. I would suppose being a reader and fan of these costumes impacted me a great deal as well. I personally wear more black than any other color. Maybe I’m one of those “emo kids” everyone was talking about 2 years ago...maybe I secretly just want people to think I have a symbiote...or something equally silly. Read more...

wonder_woman_by_alex_rossA few months back when Ben Affleck was announced as the next live-action Batman in the sequel to Man of Steel, the internet well...exploded in a blind panic. But before that news I did a “Battle for the Cowl” column looking at all of the rumored actors Hollywood was supposedly looking at and rated their abilities to play The Caped Crusader...or their “Battitude”, as I called it. Turns out none of those shmucks got the part and well...enter Affleck. Nobody saw it coming and it was one of the most confusing superhero casting choices since well...Michael “Beetlejuice” Keaton as Batman. That turned out okay, thankfully. Nonetheless, the rumor mill has begun once more and what do ya know!  It's for the same movie! Apparently there was a casting call for “Superman vs. Batman” (that name still irks’s getting the quotes until I see that name in a trailer) for a “tall, brunette, athletic and exotic”, with many sources believing that this will be Bruce Wayne’s love interest...and even more jumping to the conclusion that the character could be Wonder Woman’s alter ego Diana Prince. DarXide | Lately I’ve been asking myself, why do I keep buying this comic book, it’s crap?  The only thing I can think of is that I’m ridiculously loyal to my favorite characters. There’s nothing wrong with being loyal is there? It’s weird, the relationships we have with fictional characters.  Yes, I’ve been reading Batman longer than I’ve known some people that I’m friends with now.  I feel a sense of loyalty to him. "This is considered an insane opinion but Ditko’s doing the work of his life right now. If you are trying to talk about this as art then the guy has literally managed to deconstruct his art to a point to where it is symbols. " ~ Darwyn Cooke Read more...
