I don’t know what kind of being James Gunn is at this point. He seems like a director of geekcentric film that was built from the ground up for the benefit of mankind. He just seems to get it. He knows that in these times we need films that are fun from beginning to end and will absolutely take us away from our complicated lives for a couple of hours. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, like its predecessor, does that spectacularly. Read more...

During the many years the superhero genre of American film and television has been around, the world has witnessed a number of superhero-type characters each being played by more than one actor, whether it be for live-action screen productions, for animated works, or even both. I mean, there are numerous actors who played Bruce Wayne/Batman for live-action screen productions, 5 actors for Peter Parker/Spider-Man (with the 5th actor's performance to be revealed this year), 3 actresses for Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, etc. Read more...

OK, those of you who have read some of my articles before might appreciate that I’m a tiny bit biased when it comes to dinosaurs. That’s probably a lie – I absolutely love dinosaurs. They’re more important to me than superheroes or science fiction. They captured my imagination as a child and I’ve digested every book, documentary and movie about them as is humanly possible. So you can expect that 1993’s Jurassic Park has a very special place in my heart. There was no way I was going to miss the fourth installment of the franchise, Jurassic World, but is it an extinction level event for the series or has life found a way back into the dream of a dinosaur theme park? Jurassic-World-logo-trailer-630x350In 1993, Steven Spielberg changed the way we saw dinosaurs on film forever. Gone was the lumbering stop-motion beasts created by Ray Harryhausen (which I still think look great, by the way) from movies such as One Million Years B.C. or Valley of the Gwangi or the reptiles covered in glue and adorned with spikes which were superimposed against the camera in The Lost World. Adapting Michael Crichton’s cautionary tale about genetically engineered dinosaurs reared upon a private preserve, Jurassic Park utilized the latest in CGI and paleontological research to accurately recreate iconic prehistoric animals based upon what was known at the time. The result was astounding, blowing audiences away and bringing to life monsters that have timelessly captured the imaginations of children and adults for centuries.   Read more...

537ba61b764b4So,we all know what pretty much EVERY other comic book/pop culture website and blogger thinks should be cast as Captain Marvel in Marvel Studios' first female led superhero film. Yeah, you've heard them all... Katee Sackoff, Emily Blunt....and let's face it, pretty much everybody and their grandmother's cat wants it to be Natalie Dormer (who as Margaery Tyrell uses that sly smile of hers to, um, how do I put it...CHARM the underage new king in Game of Thrones), and while all of those are pretty great choices...are they really the only ones?! I mean, let's face it. This is a very important movie. Probably even more important than the first Iron Man or Guardians of the Galaxy was, because female superhero movies have not done well in the past. Captain_Marvel_Vol_7_1_Granov_Variant_TextlessLet's face it...they have absolutely sucked! Catwoman, Supergirl, Elektra....yeah. Not a very good track record. And let's face it. We knew superheroes and space adventures could draw audiences if done right. We have nothing but proof that female superhero movies don't! This is Marvel's biggest challenge ever. And while the film is slated for 2018, the internet has just gone insane with fan-casting of Carol Danvers. And with good reason, Carol's a great character with a rich comic book history. So,since I've done this previously with a few of DC's heroes like Wonder Woman, Batman and most recently DC's former Captain Marvel, Shazam....let's try my first Marvel casting column...with a twist! Let's cast OTHER Carols! Possible casting choices that have been lost in the Sackoff/Dormer hullabaloo. For this column, since I like to rate each choice, I will be rating each actress by her "Carol Calibre" from 1 to 5. Read more...

Congratulations on surviving another week and making it here to sweet what was hot and what was not this week. Our buddy Shia Labeouf is back and he’s hotter than the truck driver who left a trailer full of rotting meat on the side of the road. Let’s jump right in and see what this week had to offer. That’s right, Shia Labeouf is back. He’s in a new movie, Fury, a WWII drama about a platoon who is out-numbered and out-gunned but that doesn’t stop them from going after the Nazis. As part of the promotion of the movie Labeouf will be appearing on the Ellen Degeneres show today. That’s right, set your DVR, or just wait for someone to post a Youtube video, so you can see him apologize for spitting on a cop. WHAT!? As for that Youtube video, here you go. We love you, Shia.
