It has been a glorious start to the second season of Supergirl. With the big bang two-part premiere over and Superman back to Metropolis, it is time to lay the flesh on the skeleton created the previous two weeks. While episode 3 is still clearly setting up the new season it is here, more than the premiere the real seeds for what is to come are sown. Last week, we established the overall theme of this season to be change and the consequences of gaining your own voice and we said goodbye to Cat Grant. This week we delve into a plethora of Easter Eggs, new characters - beloved and well-known - as well as explore the themes and content of Welcome To Earth. Read more...

A lot can happen in two weeks. By that I mean, in a week off from broadcast our favorite CBS hero has been renewed for a second season causing a collective sigh across fandom and this week on the show the plot advances so fast with so much content it feels like five or six episodes…or part one of a season finale (which this very much is). When Supergirl aired its pilot back in September the world had no idea just how great the show would grow to be. In eighteen episodes the new CBS sci-fi working girl drama has become one of the most daring, fun and Silver Age dimension of the DCTVU. The network and audience was a perfect pairing and the attraction to longtime fans of classic tropes done in fresh and new interesting ways was not foreseen. Without question it is the best first season of the DCTVU and that includes the defunct and critically acclaimed Constantine and the new Legends of Tomorrow (though to be fair it is only ten episodes in or so). In the first season of Supergirl we have seen some incredible things. We have been privy to extended moments on Krypton and at the destruction of Mars. We have learned as much as we have ever known about the House of El in a mainstream format. We have seen the birth of Red Tornado and the diabolical threat of Non. We have seen Bizarro Girl, Live Wire and the Death of Astra (in which when it began we had no idea how much we would care for her). Read more...

Supergirl took a week off for the Grammys and it felt like an eternity to die-hard fans of this exciting new episodic family superhero show. When we last left our hero she was grieving for the death of her estranged and dangerous Aunt Astra, who was killed by her own sister and lied to by The Martian Manhunter. Max Lord was being held against his will by a government agency without due process and the relationship between Kara and just about everyone in her life was strained and uncomfortable – especially between her and her idol/employer Cat Grant. To my knowledge the most used and beloved trope from comics is the idea that to protect the ones you love you have to lie to them or push them away. In the Superman Family it has always been a delicate balance of semantics and of heartbreak as inevitably everyone our superhero loves is pushed out of their lives “for their own protection”.
