This is one of the hottest weeks all year, especially if you like comic books. If you don’t like comic books there may be something terribly wrong with you, but if you’re one of the many who do you will agree that Free Comic Book Day is one of the best days of the entire year. Be sure to get out to your local participating comic book shop to get some free comics and purchase some that you’ve been meaning to grab.

Since FCBD hasn’t happened yet, let’s do a recap of what has and see what’s hot and what’s not. This week has been full of fist fights, name calling and astonishing selfies. If you ever have a chance to take a selfie with a squirrel you probably shouldn’t. First off, selfies are not hot, second off squirrels know this more than anyone else. A teen was on his spring break in Florida, took a chance to take a selfie with a local squirrel. He did get the photo but moments after he was attacked by said squirrel. The best part of this whole ordeal, his mother kept taking photos while her son was trying to get an angry squirrel out of his t-shirt. The kid survived the ordeal and had a great sense of humor about it.

Animals are all over the hot list this week. The Kentucky Derby is this weekend. Who doesn’t like obnoxious hats and funny named horses? Candy Boy and Wicked Strong should win something for their names alone. Sharks are also making the news this week. Yes, it was announced this week that there will be a Sharknado 3. It’s scheduled for summer 2015 and Bunny Lebowski will be back. Sharknado 2 will be out this July and will take place in New York. Flying sharks, who’d have thought?

For those fans of good music you can rejoice as Judas Priest has announced a new album. They released one song this week and the full album is set to release on July 15, 2014. It will have 13 songs plus five bonus tracks and surely won’t disappoint. The album has been about three years in the making and you can listen to their newly released track, “Redeemer of Souls” on their website.

One of Judas Priest’s biggest hits was, “Breaking the Law” and hopefully these students were just using it for a theme song as they wreaked havoc on a school building. More than 60 teenagers broke into a New Jersey school, flipped over desks, greased door handles and urinated in the hallways. The thought of doing this has probably crossed every teenager’s mind at one point or another but to actually act on those thoughts is not hot. There’s a line and they definitely crossed it with the “urinating in the hallways”. These kids definitely need a different form of education, one that the authorities will hopefully teach them.

The police have been busy this week. Investigating a prank gone badly, then a phone call from Paul Simon began another investigation. Paul Simon and Edie Brickell haven’t made the news since Beavis and Butthead watched the video for “What I Am”, back in 1993. Last weekend Paul “Call Me Al” Simon called the police after he and his wife had a physical confrontation. Is it possible that it was a publicity stunt? The dueling duo released a new song on Brickell’s website this Wednesday. Whatever it was, they both showed up in court and said that they weren’t a threat to each other and they’d rather go spend time with Julio down by the school yard now. In a weird mix up love triangle sort of thing, Paul Simon’s ex Carrie Fisher is also in the news this week. Did you know that Carrie Fisher was engaged to Dan Akroyd, during the filming of “The Blues Brothers”, but Simon won her heart back and she dumped Elwood Blues for the other short guy.

The cast of the new Star Wars film was released this week and fans are rejoicing, especially since Mark Hamill has assured the fans that the movie is in good hands. Hamill, Fisher and Harrison are all returning and in some most exciting news, Max von Sydow is in the movie as well. If the name isn’t familiar to you think, “The Exorcist”, “Flash Gordon”, and the voice of Vigo from “Ghostbusters II” to name only a few of his well known films. The newest cast members of the franchise don’t have their characters named yet, but Han, Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C3PO will all return.
Returning from a galaxy far far away, let’s travel back to Florida. Well, some may argue that it is a completely different planet, but that’s just an opinion of many. Another opinion is that texting/talking while driving is not hot. In some states it’s illegal, but that loveable southern state has yet to say that it is. That didn’t stop a 60 year old vigilante who drove, for two years, with a cellphone jammer in his car. Everyday on his commute he would turn on the device that would interrupt service. A year ago MetroPCS contacted the FCC letting them know there was something that was causing outages in a particular area of Highway 4 in Tampa, FL. On one hand this is hot because texting/talkling and driving are definitely not hot, but his device also disabled the sheriff’s radio. When the man was pulled over authorities knew right away that this was the culprit they were looking for, even without a search warrant. As the deputies pulled him over and approached his vehicle they lost all contact with their dispatchers. There’s also a possibility that a motorist would need to call 911 and wouldn’t be able to.
Game of Thrones is definitely hot, but what about artists putting a Disney spin on it? Is this hot, or not?

New Kids on the Block, or NKOTB, were once very very hot. It’s still up in the air whether or not they still are. They have decided to test out their hotness by agreeing to a new reality TV series. To add to the excitement it will take place on a cruise ship. A pirate theme would be great for this. Any member of the audience not seen singing along will have to “Step by Step” right off the plank.

Finally, the last member inducted onto the hot list this week is the employee that knows how to have fun. This week customers at a Chicago area doughnut shop were treated with an extra long receipt. Why is this hot? Because this receipt was paying homage to the late, great Mitch Hedberg. Hedberg is well known for his humor that pokes fun at people who lack common sense. Indeed, why would you ever need to prove that you purchased the donut that you are eating?
That’s not all that was hot or not this week but all that we have time for. Let’s see if Shia LaBeouf continues to be not famous, Rob Ford stays in rehab and if the sale of the L.A. Clippers brings an end to the East Coast/West Coast rap feud. Can you imagine Snoop Dogg and P. Diddy working together in peace love and basketball? Until next week, stay hot and go out and get some free comic books!
