Over 20 years ago, DC Comics and Marvel Comics did the unthinkable. The two companies teamed up to settle the ultimate debate, with the help of their fans. To make a show primarily focused on time travel is a difficult thing when you rely on the headiness of the plot to anchor the viewer rather than the emotional bonds of less intricately plotted shows. One of the easiest ways to do this however involves making the time periods relevant and interesting enough to tell more self-contained stories within the larger. But with Legends, as we have discussed, there is a serious piece missing from the series, even more than last season’s freshman run. You see, the best parts of the CW superhero lineup on the other nights of the week is the deep thematic approach that is not taken here and those themes tend to make us emotionally connected to them. The finale proved once and for all that in the realm of pure sci-fi tropes it is hard to find a better superhero show anywhere. This ability to cater to longtime fans and a new generation of TV only viewers is its strength but not the reason people stay – that is because of the heart of the show which can be largely attributed to the cast and or casting department. The end approaches. The end of the second spectacular family sci-fi show The Flash is barreling to a rapid end and the fate of Earth-1 hangs in the balance as the season long battle with Zoom reaches its darkest hour. Each episode this season as we walked together through the themes, events and excitement, we have been delighted and saddened by the ride. Last week Barry tried to cope with the loss of his powers and succeeded on some levels but was reminded how much more effective he was as the Flash. We also saw Zoom take Caitlyn and head for our earth. Read more...

The Reverse Flash was a devious evil baddie in The Flash’s season 1. He destroyed trust, broke hearts and murdered loved ones in his quest to destroy Barry Allen and we loved it all season long last. This year we have been treated to a vastly different Harrison Wells, the original Thawne and a long journey to heal, recover and solidify into the hero no villain wants him to become. As the viewer, we have the Reverse Flash to thank for the Flash, both literally and figuratively. Read more...

This week was a joy.  This week has been the best so far this year in the world of episodic TV superheroes and while seeing the Black Mercy of Mongul on Supergirl whets the appetite this week’s episode of The Flash is the main course feast of Easter eggs and character reveals. Read more...

Starting the second story arc of the season seems to be a place where a lot of shows struggle to regain momentum and keep interest alive in their series during the buildup to the holiday season. A plethora of new shows and episodes of shows already hits stretch the airwaves and if you miss a beat between now and the mid-season hiatus then real drop off in ratings and internet buzz could leave a show drowning like Constantine – which was a fantastic show with so many other problems including a Friday night timeslot and a disinterested network – but also a stall in the mid-season action made it easy to forget in a buffet of geektastic television programming. Time once again to delve into the episodic superhero phenomenon called The Flash and I am pleased to be your guide once again. So far this season we have seen the emergence of 52 parallel realities called the multiverse, learned Iris’ mom is still alive and has a son as well. We have seen countless times the skeletal structure of the show fleshed out with new villains like Atom Smasher, Zoom, Dr. Light and even a few parallel world heroes like Jay Garrick. We have seen in just five episodes that a new love for Barry and a new partner for Joe are one in the same and named Patty Spivot and she is the grounding force for Barry that Iris and Linda could not produce in prior experiences.
