I don’t make it a secret. I’m a huge X-Men fan. Have been my whole life. Ever since first seeing the team’s guest appearance on the Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends cartoon when I was very young, I was very enamoured by the team. At first it was the original Beast that caught my eye. A superhero with huge, goofy ape feet? Crazy! Weird! I loved the originality. Then it was me “stealing” my big brother’s Uncanny X-Men comics from his stash (even though I was too young to even know how to read) and seeing these lavish, out-there costumes and characters that in any other superhero story would probably be the villains. Nightcrawler, Rogue, Storm (with the mohawk, of course), Colossus, Kitty Pryde, Rachel Summers....and of course, Wolverine. They were so cool beyond words. They were edgy and gritty and never ever got a break in the world, but that never stopped them from being heroes. I was born without the ability to walk and I identified with these heroes who were also born a little different. Their leader was in a wheelchair. I was and will be bonded to the X-Men forever. “I’m Unbreakable.” That was what did it for me. I’m probably the biggest Luke Cage fan that I know, ever since reading my older brother’s Power Man And Iron Fist comics back when...well, before I could even read...I’ve always thought that these two superheroes could be phenomenal in live action, be it TV or movies. As far as Canadian superheroes go, We all know of Captain Canuck, Marvel’s Alpha Flight and Wolverine and of course, The Heroes of the North (a production which I myself am a part of), but not many people know of the original Canadian comic book superheroes of the Golden Age. Rachel Richey is a Canadian comic book archivist and historian and has made it her mission with her Comic Syrup Press publishing label to bring awareness to Canada’s comic book history and put these great characters back into the spotlight. At Montreal ComicCon I had the chance to sit with Rachel and chat about herself and her projects! Enjoy! Read more...

This week, the U.S. Supreme Court made a huge leap towards equality for LGBT couples and declared same sex marriage legal in all states nationwide. This is a big deal for many and a fresh, new step forward for civil rights in the United States! Comics have for quite some time been a very strong leader in terms of presenting strong and believable LGBT characters. As far back as I could remember they have been represented in some way (even with some thick headed and ridiculous restrictions in place by the Comics Code Authority). Read more...

twilight-x-men-baseball1The Superbowl is upon us and it's that time of year when almost everyone in North America plops down in front of their TVs with chicken wings and all sorts of junk food and watches the two best teams in the NFL go head to head! It's pretty exciting stuff, and this one game means a lot to a lot of people! Does the comic book community take part? I'd say a lot of them do, some fake interest, some don't even bother. But it has nothing to do with their interest in funny books. Not everyone is into sports, it's just that simple. But I think EVERYONE has a bit of interest in popular events, and that's the real appeal of the Superbowl. In spirit of the "Big Game", I decided to take a look at the 10 best athletes from comics. There's actually quite a few! I even have some spandexed individuals who could have even been Superbowl champions themselves! Y'know, if they weren't so busy saving the planet. Read more...
