I have to say, that in the two weeks that I’ve owned Injustice 2, I have rarely put my controller down. Not only is the story better than the first, but there is replay value, as the ending changes on whether you side with Superman’s brand of justice, or Batman’s. And then you have the option to replay the game to see the other ending and gain more fun customization rewards.
The character customization feature is awesome beyond words. I admit I as sceptical when I first heard you’d be able to “unlock armor” for the characters, as I find many of the characters already are designed with too much armor. Why would The Flash or Superman need so much clunky armor? But that’s not the case at all. It’s not so much armor as it is alternate costume pieces and color schemes that you get to mix and match, and I have to admit that I’ve possibly spent more time coming up with costumes than actually playing the game! And each costume piece is available depending on the character’s EXP, which keeps you playing and building the character. I’m a creative person, and I love customization in video games but when you add comics into the mix? It becomes a problem for me. I need to leave the house at some point!!
Well, there’s a little review, but this column is NOT a review piece! There’s been already a DLC pack for the game announced featuring 3 new playable characters, Starfire, Red Hood and Sub-Zero (as much as a MK fan as I am, I am not happy when they add DLC characters from that franchise when there are PLENTY of DCU characters that could have gotten that spot). With 9 DLC characters expected in total, what other famous DC alumni will get the nod? I have 5 ideas on who we get to kick butt with (and hopefully customize).
He may not be the most popular of DC’s characters, but I think there’s a lot you can do with Atom. And I think Brandon Routh’s portrayal of Ray Palmer on TV has raised his stock a little. And with Firestorm, Captain Cold, Vixen as an alternate skin for Cheetah (with a unique voiceover) and the ability to create White Canary by customizing Black Canary already in the game, one more Legend of Tomorrow can’t hurt.
There’s also so many different versions of Atom over the decades, the customization possibilities are endless. You have the Golden Age Atom, you have the Ray Palmer Atom, you have the Sword of the Atom era, you have the Routh Arrowverse armor and you have the new DC Rebirth Atom, Ryan Choi’s armor. You can even throw in some Atom Smasher gear. Wow, my mouth is watering at what I could create.
With his shrinking abilities, coming up with fighting techniques for Atom would be fun too! Imagine a super move involving shrinking to a subatomic level and entering your opponent’s body?! That could get messy.
Trust me, having Atom in Injustice 2 would be a lot more fun than you’d think.
John Constantine! The Hellblazer! How fun would it be to be able to cast crazy voodoo spells on big, bad, magic vulnerable Superman? This is the man to do it. Sure we already have Dr. Fate in the game, but more mystics, the better! Also, John Constantine is too cool for school.
His TV series may have been short-lived (not given the chance, more-like), but Matt Ryan resumed the role on Arrow and again in the Justice League Dark animated movie. Let’s give the talented Mr. Ryan, who plays Constantine to the hilt, more work, shall we? He already gained fame as a video game voice actor after playing swashbuckling pirate Edward Kenway in the Assassin’s Creed series, so he’s no stranger to the genre.
Conjuring demons and incantations to battle his enemies would make John a delight to be in charge of. The only snafu with adding Constantine would be that there’s not too much you could do to him in terms of customization, since he’s basically just a blonde British guy in a trench coat. Hey, they could maybe add a Keanu Reeves alternate skin from the 2005 movie, right? No? Okay, then. Moving on.
The Suicide Squad movie got mixed reviews (I may be one of the only people on the planet that actually enjoyed it...it’s a lonely existence), but I think most people will agree that Katana is still a pretty badass character that seems custom-made for a NetherRealm Fighting game.
Tatsu Yamashiro, the magical sword wielding samurai was played by Karen Fukuhara in the Suicide Squad film and Rila Fukushima in the TV Arrowverse and both have amazing versions of the revamped New 52 costume. When you add all the different versions of the character including her classic red and yellow Outsiders look, there are quite a few customization possibilities. You could even customize the Soultaker sword in many ways (yes even weapons are customizable in this game!!), and not to mention her amazing martial arts abilities would make her very fun as a playable character.
I actually can’t find a reason for Katana NOT to be an obvious DLC choice for Injustice 2. I’m surprised she wasn’t included as an on-disk playable character, to be honest.
Well, we’ve had Robin, Cyborg, Raven and soon we will be getting Starfire in this series, so it’s only fair that eventually they give us the class clown of the Teen Titans, Beast Boy! He’s very popular to the fans of the Teen Titans and Teen Titans GO! cartoon series’, so why not give them what they want?!
Gar Logan first appeared in the Doom Patrol comic book in 1965 and then evolved into Changeling in the DC Comics Presents and then the Teen Titans comic in the 80’s. He’s gone through a lot of changes but one constant remained, he was fun, devilish and he could shape-shift into any animal he imagined. There’s a lot of different costumes and versions of him you could customize too, even the more feral, red version of him from the New 52!
The playability factor of Beast Boy in a Fighting game is nearly limitless, as he can shape-shift constantly and the perfect super move would be for him to turn into a Tyrannosaurus Rex and chow down on his opponent! Also, you can get Greg Cipes to resume the role as his is the voice I always think of when I think of Beast Boy.
ANY...And I Mean ANY Of The Main Characters From Watchmen
I know. That’s more than 5. But you could take any one of the main characters from Alan Moore’s Watchmen and put them in the game. I mean, why not take 3 of them and make a whole Watchmen DLC pack!? Rorschach, Nite Owl, Comedian, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, even Dr. Manhattan, it doesn’t matter. All of them are do-able and I’d gladly geek out to see them added.
And this coincides with what’s happening in the comics currently too, as Geoff Johns will be doing the first crossover series with Watchmen and the DCU very soon. I’m sure this makes Alan Moore vomit every time he hears of it, but nonetheless, it is happening. And I’m not ashamed to say that I’m excited for it. I actually really enjoyed all of the Before Watchmen books. And who doesn’t want to see Rorschach vs. Batman? Even more...who wouldn’t want to PLAY it? Injustice 2 is the way to make that happen.
You could even add the characters’ Golden Age costume items for customization. Dr. Manhattan may make things a little too R-rated though, as he often rocks out with his...well you know. But nonetheless, his super move would be epic beyond words. Come to think of it...could he be TOO powerful to be in this game? I mean, the Doc versus almost EVERY character in the game seems a bit of overkill, doesn’t it?
Anyway, a Watchmen pack or just one character would be maybe the wildest move ever for NetherRealm. And it’s not actually that far-fetched!
There you go, kiddos. Whether you are a comic book fan, a Fighting game fan or just a gamer in general, I would give injustice 2 a go. It is worth every penny, and puts a great spin on its genre, because you rarely get to evolve and improve the fighters the more you play.
That’s it for now! Bleed out!
