Coulson, Fitz, May, Mack and Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider went to stop Eli but a blast was set off and Phil, Fitz and Robbie mysteriously disappeared.
*SPOILERS ON THE WAY!*
May and Mack looked everywhere but there is no sign of their teammates, while Eli escaped with his Dark Matter and killed the “red shirt” S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on the way out. He also created a big black wall to insure his getaway!
Meanwhile Director Mace, Daisy and a few others are watching the events from HQ and foolish Mace makes us hate him even more by immediately thinking they are all dead. Daisy makes it clear that this is S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Marvel Universe, and NOBODY EVER REALLY DIES! But Mace, even though Inhuman, is a big douche and doesn’t GET IT.
And guess what? They AIN’T dead! It seems Eli somehow used the Darkhold to transport them onto another plain. Which is pretty cool because we are now post-Doctor Strange and we all now understand the multiverse a whole lot better, right? Right! They actually feel like ghosts and can see what their teammates are doing but cannot interact with them. It’s kind of like in Ghost, but without Patrick Swayze and romantic pottery making with Demi Moore (and that’s a shame).
In the meantime, Mace has sent Gemma Simmons to a secret location and we find out why Senator Rona Nadeer is actually blackmailing Mace. Remember a few weeks ago and we found out why she was in league with the Watchdogs? She has a loved one that was effected by terrigenisis and is still in the cocoon state. She is holding the fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. is working alongside two unregistered superhumans (Quake and GR) over his head to help her “resolve” this problem. Gemma doesn’t like what is happening but wants to help the trapped Inhuman anyway. She makes the guards leave the room and finds the heartbeat of the trapped Inhuman. She begins talking to him/her (in hopes she can be heard) and the heartbeat seems to respond to her voice. The cocoon begins to crack and later in the show we see that it is a young man in there. Gemma is then blindfolded again and taken out of the room before she can speak to the new Inhuman further.
I have a few guesses as to who the new Inhuman could be. The strongest is probably Grid, named Dinesh Deol in the comics. Dinesh is a former engineer that has the ability to control the electromagnetic spectrum, including magnetokinesis, computer interaction, electromagnetic vision, electromagnetic pulse emission and more. He’s a pretty powerful kid and if you’re reading the Death of X miniseries, you’d see how wild his powers are. He can shut down a whole city if he wanted. I hope this is who it is, as he is somehow related to Nadeer and is clearly of Indian descent. Of course he could be any number of Marvel characters or even a totally new character created for the show as well.
As Coulson and Fitz attempt to figure out how to get their friends in the real world to hear them, they realize that wherever they are it is getting darker and darker and are being sucked into another dimension for good. They don’t have time to fool around! But at the same time Fitz overhears Mace speaking about what he did to Gemma and he ain’t too happy about it. I actually thought he was gonna try to deck him and the fist would phase right through his face, and he almost did!
As for Robbie, who is also stuck in limbo, well, his situation is a lot different. Since he has a demon inside of him, the Ghost Rider decides he can’t be in this realm and his thirst for vengeance must be carried out by another. But who?! Zarathos (which is what the demon is actually named) takes Mack as a new host! And decides to go after the rest of the Chinese Triad that Eli used to steal the ghost boxes a few episodes back. The only difference is “Mack Rider” seems to totally be controlled by the demon and takes one of the motorcycles off the Zephyr to complete his mission. Daisy follows in Robbie’s ’69 Charger (with “ghost Robbie” in tow, unbeknownst to her).
It’s pretty badassed to see Mack go all Ghost Rider (flaming skull and all), and by the end of it all he and Robbie understand what exactly the demon is. The one thing I would have loved to see would be the hellfire shotgun that Johnny Blaze once wielded after his tenure as Ghost Rider. Since Mack is so attached to his axe/shotgun, this upgrade would be awesome! Maybe this will happen in the near future? It would definitely help out when the agents go up against supernatural enemies.
As the darkness is closing in, Fitz and Coulson are able to get through to AIDA of all people...or life model decoys rather. She is on the Zephyr with her creator Holden Radcliffe to help Mace with the ghost boxes and the Darkhold. Fitz is able to somehow get AIDA to hear him (because she isn’t human, apparently) and try to read the Darkhold herself. Since she is an android, no actual human life will be compromised. But what will it do to her?! Will we end up with another Ultron situation? Apparently everyone forgot what happens when A.I.’s are combined with forces we don’t understand. Tony Stark and the Avengers learned the hard way.
Or she could become an awesome android superhero like Vision, but I doubt it. Nothing good EVER comes from the Darkhold. Ever. You’re lucky you don’t end up with a horde of undead creatures coming after you after opening that book. This will NOT end well!
The episode is another great one and was another super cool evolution of Ghost Rider and how the demon is the one in control, making Robbie a victim of sorts. We also got to see more of Jeffrey Mace and how he cannot be trusted, or even liked. He even mentions his disapproval of how Mack leaves on a motorcycle without a helmet, making him seem even more of an obnoxious goodie-two shoes that makes Captain America look like Frank Castle. I totally can’t stand him and hope Coulson ends up back in charge soon. Fitz and Phil even have a fight over how he “let” Mace take over. Leo’s is really growing a pair as of late, and I like it.
Another interesting thing that is happening in terms of character development is the growing relationship between May and Coulson. She showed a lot of distress at the concept of Phil possibly being dead and it's clear that they have growing feelings beyond being teammates and friends. It reminds me a lot of Wolverine and Storm (specifically Old Man Logan as of late in the comics). They have foiught and battled side by side and love has grown from it. It will be great to see how this goes as the series goes on.
We really do have a lot to look forward to with this show, since we now know that the Inhumans will soon have their own show on ABC! That's right, coming soon the Inhuman royal family will be coming to TV (with the first two episoded premiering in theaters on IMAX screens), and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will most definitely have a big role to play as this is the show that introduced Inhumans into the MCU. I personally can't wait to see Black Bolt, Medusa, Crystal, Lockjaw and especially my personal favorite Inhuman, KARNAK! I think this could be even cooler than a movie, if done properly!
Looking forward to next week! Uncle Eli is gonna GET IT!! Seeya next time, kiddos! Bleed Out!
