So I decided to geek over this thing even more and list my favorite things about it! Why not? It’s maybe the best thing in ANY universe at the moment! First off, here’s the trailer to refresh everyone’s memories (and hey, we get to watch it again! I’ve lost count as to how many times I’ve watched it).
So good. So. Good. Okay, now that we’re all refreshed, let’s get down to brass tacks. Here are the 5 geekgasmic things about that nearly two minutes of wonderful footage.
Oh yes! The masters of rock have a presence in this trailer. Marvel and Disney shelled out the moolah and got Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song, which not only works for this trailer but totally correlates with the far-out Thor comics of the 60’s and 70’s, which this movie clearly is inspired by.
The title saw such amazing artists as Gil Kane, Neal Adams, John Buscema and of course Jack Kirby bring the God of Thunder to life during this time. I can’t imagine how many people actually read Thor comics while listening to Zepplin back in the day. It feels like they go hand-in-hand.
The song has been stuck in my head for weeks now...and may be stuck in there until November! Maybe it would help if I stopped watching the trailer. Yeah, that’s not gonna happen.
OH HELA YEAH!
Oh my, Cate Blanchett! I never knew you had it in her to be so devilishly BAD! Hela is one of Thor’s most dangerous villains, and Miss Blanchett has seemingly embodied her in this movie! Not only does she shatter the mighty hammer Mjiolnir to bits with one hand, but dammmn she looks good doing it!
The costume, the hair, the eyeshadow and elsewhere in the trailer she even dons the classic headdress from the comics! She looks haunting...and also has that sexyness and attitude that would make a Suicide Girl blush!
Loki was mischevious, Malekith tried his best but Hela will definitely be the greatest Thor villain on screen yet! Mark my words, mortal!
Hail To The King
What got many hardcore fans clamoring about this trailer was its clever use of Jack Kirby’s legendary style of imagery. Most notably the mural behind The Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) as they are about to watch the big battle royale! Many of the movie’s costumes are directly inspired by Kirby’s one-of-a-kind art style as well. There’s a reason they called the man “The King” and director Taika Waititi and his design team actually seem to GET that.
With this movie featuring Thor exploring the more far-off locales in the Marvel Universe rather than just being stuck on Earth, it was the perfect opportunity to invoke Kirby and his cosmic-powered art. Man, this movie is gonna be a beautiful piece of work.
Karl Urban as Skurge: The Executioner
I have been waiting a long time to see this character in a Thor movie. It was bound to happen! And while the ideal thing would have been to see Skurge battling for the love of The Enchantress, another notable Thor villain, it doesn’t seem like she’s in this movie. My best guess is they’ve combined Hela with The Enchantress to a degree, and Skurge is devoted to her instead, which totally works for me! I couldn’t take BOTH naughty goddesses in one movie, anyway!
Skurge is played by Karl Urban, who is having an amazing career playing so many iconic characters from Judge Dredd to “Bones” McCoy and now The Executioner! And he’s barely recognizable! I actually didn’t spot that it was Karl Urban right away, but I knew EXACTLY which machine gun wielding character this was! He is so comic accurate it’s ridiculous! It made me so happy!
I don’t know how big his role is going to be (it may be just a cameo for all we know), but I’m just happy we are going to see Skurge in a movie, finally! It definitely looks like Ragnarok is the “go hard or go home” Thor movie that will make all our dreams come true!
WOOOO DOGGY! We all sort of knew this was happening, but the rumours and concept art meant NOTHING until we actually heard the Grandmaster introduce “Your Incrediiiiiiblllllee....” followed by Hulk smashing through the gate in his signature battle armor from the Planet Hulk storyline!
This is it, guys! The money shot! Even though Thor is happy to see that his opponent is his “friend from work”, it’s clear the two will go at it and we will finally see the definitive scrap between Hulk and Thor that began in that first Avengers movie. Will there actually be a winner this time?
So many questions. Why is Hulk so angry? Did the Grandmaster do something to him? Is he pissed at Thor for some reason? How did Banner get across the galaxy?! All we know is that this is going to be awesome beyond words. I would have much preferred if Hulk’s appearance in the movie was kept as an awesome surprise but that is impossible these days. I’m sure there’s still a lot of pleasant surprises in this movie.
All of that and this was still a TEASER trailer! TEASER! If that was just an appetizer, the main course is going to possibly explode our brains apart! All of that and I didn’t even mention Thor’s haircut, Loki looking all badass, Heimdall’s new look, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and so many other awesome flashes of brilliance that we see in this thing!
So, yes. I’m excited. You should be too! We live in the best of times, my Bleeder Buddies! Rejoice! There’s a lot more to be excited for this year than there is to complain about (but I know some of you will find things to anyway, ya Debbie Downers), so let’s just be happy. It’s easier. Is there anything you love about this trailer that I missed? Hit us up and let me know!
‘Til next time! Bleed out, Midgard!
