I covered DC Comic's LEGENDS #1 last week. This week, I will be covering issue #2 of the series !! Legends #2 starts off with Gwyneth Tate, a newswoman who is reporting on the incineration of Macro Man .by Captain Marvel. G. Gordon Godfrey "happens" to be on the scene for an interview. Godfrey bemoans the "Rise of the Super Hero" who he claims will bring about society's downfall. "Today's high powered world is too sophisticated, too complicated, simply too dangerous for such a outdated notion as the Heroic Ideal!"
G. Gordon Godfrey's words quickly sway a crowd of onlookers, whom all start to agree with Godfrey. It is a small wonder that Godrey's words cause such a quick effect. "G. Gordon Godfrey is, in reality, Glorious Godfrey, a minion of Darkseid. He is using his persuasion powers to incite the people of Earth against their heroes! Billy Batson flees in terror from the increasingly angry mob. He remembers how he, as Captain Marvel, fought Macro Man and accedently killed him by calling down his magic lightning.
On Apokolips, Darkseid gloats over how well his plan is succeeding. Macro Man's "incineration" was naught but a ruse by Darkseid! The Phantom Stranger tells Darkseid that his position still stands. Mankind will eventually regain their senses. On Earth, the Justice League Of America (Detroit Era) are in battle with the monsterous Brimstone. The creature easily fights off an attack by J'onn Jonzz, The Martian Manhunter, only to be toppled by Vibe. Brimstone brings a whole building down upon the League; burying them alive! Meanwhile, in Riker's Island Prison, inmate # 23964, aka Floyd Lawton, aka Deadshot is visited by two men.
One is Colonel Rick Flagg, who has a proposition for Lawton. There is a job that needs doing -- a dangerous job. If Lawton accepts the offer and survives, he will be pardoned of all current charges. The other man is Ben "The Bronze Tiger" Turner. He tells Deadshot that HE will be there to make CERTAIN that Lawton does not "get lost". Lawton tells Flagg that he will accept the deal and the three men depart. Meanwhile, in a shopping mall in Gotham, Batman and Robin manage to defeat and apprehend a gang of murderous thugs who are blasting machine guns and taking hostages. Once they are subdued, an angry Captain Kirkland of the Gotham Police Department, starts to angrily argue with Batman and his "interference".
The anger starts to spread, as more and more people start to agree with Kirkland. A mob of people grab Robin and drag him down. Before he can help, Batman is hit in the face by a bottle of perfume. Temporarily blinded, Batman allows Commissioner Gordon to hasten him outside, under Gordon's promise that they will take care of Robin. Outside, another angry mob turns over the Batmobile! In Chicago, The Blue Beetle interrupts a drug deal. The police arrive, and begin to berate the Beetle. Why? Because they have been tracking the dealer for a while so that they could track him to his connection. The punk, sensing his opening, quickly tells the police that the Blue Beetle himself is his connection.
The police, without a minutes thought, aim their guns at the Blue Beetle! As the Beetle races to board his "Flying Bug" (a plane that is in the shape of -- what else? -- a Blue Beetle!) the police open fire! The Blue Beetle is struck, but his costume's insulation protects him from harm. In the air, a plane is in trouble. The plane's jet engine erupts and causes the plan to begin to plummet! Green Lantern Guy Gardner zooms in and eases the plane down to the ground. When Guy Gardener is accosted by the very passengers that he has saved, Gardener's reaction is instantaneous and forceful. Using his power ring, Gardener shoves the passengers away from him before departing. The passengers curse Gardner and shake their fists at him in rage. "And thus, the poison grows" quotes the caption.
Cosmic Boy wakes up at Titan's Tower. He managed to pull himself out of the wreckage, only to find himself alone. The Justice League having left earlier (they were busy in their own title, where they are fighting the murderous menace of Professor Ivo), the Flash and the Changeling found and brought a dazed Cosmic Boy to the Tower. He thanks them for their help, before quickly departing in order to find his girlfriend. She is -- " out there somewhere in the middle of all of this insanity -- and I've got to find her before it's too late!"
At the White House, Superman speaks with a concerned President Ronald Reagan. Mob violence has erupted all across America. There are super heroes being burned in effigy, riots and protests. The situation has gotten so dire, that the President decides that he has no other choice. He will issue an executive order for all super heroes to cease their activities until this crisis is passed! The story ends with two police officers who have found a badly beaten and unconscious Robin The Boy Wonder laying on the floor in a heap.
Legends #2 continues the story began in issue # 1 in a fine manner. This mini series is one of DC Comic's finest !! Mr. Bronze Age will continue the 30th Anniversary celebration of LEGENDS with issue #3 coming soon!
