Wally West Flashback

Written by  Published July 31, 2014 11:32
Wally West. The Flash. A third generation super hero , determined to uphold the legacy of those that went before -- Jay Garrick and Barry Allen. Flash # 1  was he first comic to bare that title in DC Comics long history.  Jay's book was " All - Flash " and Barry's first issue was # 105. Flash # 1 starts with Wally buying a small snack -- six Baby Ruths, - and Five dollars worth of Lottery tickets. When Wally goes back to his apartment , he is " surprised " by his friends in the Teen Titans . It is Wally West's twentieth birthday.  Unfortunately , he gets called away during the party be people who need the Flash's help. Wally is asked to deliver a donor heart to multi award winning science fiction writer Eugenie Hegstrom .  Wally is impressed -- he has always been a huge fan of her books,  who is in a Seattle hospital. Wally agrees to take the heart , but asks for a few conditions.  The first -- health insurance. Flash offers to be " on call " to them if they will take care of his medical bills. Somewhat taken aback by this request , the medical staff have no choice but to agree to Wally's request. Wally also asks for a plane ticket back home. Since he cannot travel at light speed anymore with 705 miles per hour is his limit now.  It will take him three hours of running full out over snowy rocky terrain to get the heart there in time.

The deal is made, and Wally is quickly on his way.  Along the way , WallyFlash-Vol.-2-1-1987 reflects on the previous Flash -- Barry Allen. Wally aspires to be like Barry - " a picture of what a HERO should be.   Wally make his way into Iowa and on into Central Wyoming when it happens. It takes the Flash another twenty miles before the scene he has seen registers on him. Out in the middle of nowhere , a MURDER is being committed. The Flash doubles back, only to find a dying man.

With his dying breaths , the man gasps out to the Flash that he is a private investigator , who was hired to run a check on a man called " Varney Sack. " He was found out , and Sack lured him into a trap. With his final breath , the man tells the Flash that " Varney Sack " is just an alias for the man's real name : " VANDAL SAVAGE. At the mention of his name , the hulking Savage comes running out of the gathering darkness, intent on eliminating the Flash as well. Flash evades Savage's onslaught . Before Wally can counter attack, Savage vanishes right in front of him.

Flash-v2-002-05Flash must put himself through the wringer to get the heart to the hospital in time . Exhausted , he finally arrives at the hospital in time. Seventeen hours later, Flash is awakened by a nurse, who tells him that the operation was a success . Ms. Eugenie Hegstrom wants to see him. She wants to see him in costume , and Wally obliges . While there, he mentions the name of Vandal Savage. Ms. Hegstrom has heard of him remarking that, if he exists, he " would be a force of great good, or overpowering evil." Ms. Hegstrom is an interesting character . It is too bad that she never appeared again.

While on the plane back home , terrorists try to hijack the plane. Wally deals with them within seconds . He punches one so many times, he sprains his hand. Back home , Wally , while watching TV , is shocked to discover that he has a winning lottery ticket. Wally West has just became a multi millionaire.  It is then that Wally notices the package . Thinking it to be an unopened birthdayflash 2 present, he opens and discovers to his shock and horror that it contains a human heart.  By reflex action, he ejects his Flash uniform from his ring. Then , comes a voice from behind -- " Put it on." As the Flash turns in surprise, he sees the menacing giant form of Vandal Savage facing him. Vandal then delivers the best line in the book  ( The line I still remember almost thirty years later !)  " Live as the Flash -- DIE as the Flash !!"

DC Comics , in an effort to make Wally's Flash different from Barry's, hired NEXUS writer Mike Baron to write the new series . Baron accepted , but did not stay on the Flash book for very long . Baron's series was certainly different . In a real sign of the times, (late 1980's )  readers wrote in complaining about not only Wally's very active sex life, but also of his many numerous bed partners.

How the times have changed.  Flash # 1 began a grand run (pun intended , of course)  of a comic that would last for two hundred and thirty issues.  It is a good and suspenseful first issue , that sets up the characters and the overall tone of the book perfectly.
